Viet Cong – “Static Wall”

Viet Cong are one of the best surprises of the year if you’re a fan of the late, lamented Calgary rock band Women. After several years of silence since that band’s break-up, former members Matt Flegel and drummer Mike Wallace formed Viet Cong, and they picked things right up with the incredible “Bunker Buster” earlier… More »

Viet Cong – “Bunker Buster”

Once upon a time there was a four-piece band from Calgary called Women. They released two fantastic, critically acclaimed albums; the second, Public Strain, is one of my personal favorites of this entire decade. And then everything fell apart in a very ugly break up, made worse by the fact that it all went dow… More »

Androgynous Mind – “Knock On My Door”

Androgynous Mind is Patrick Flegel, the former guitarist and singer of Calgary band Women, joined by Morgan Cook. Women were a band that had built their sound towards something truly great shortly before breaking up in 2010 and any chances of a reconciliation were mostly squashed by guitarist and sampler Chris Reimer’s death. They are… More »

Women’s Chris Reimer Gets Posthumous Release

Women guitarist Chris Reimer passed away in February, more or less ensuring that the Calgary band (already on hiatus) would never record a follow-up to their fantastic sophomore album, Public Strain. However, some of Reimer’s solo recordings are now available, thanks to Reimer’s friends and producer Chad VanGaalen. More »

According to the National Post (via the Calgary Herald), guitarist Christopher Reimer of the acclaimed Canadian indie rock outfit Women passed away in his sleep last night. His cause of death is still unknown. He was 26.

Women have been on a hiatus since a fistfight broke out between the group at a… More »

In Memoriam: Bands We Lost In 2010

They don’t call it the dead of winter for nothing. (Ooof.) Sorry, but there’s no easy segue from our holiday cheer into a post about the bummers of this year. Autumn is harvest, when we pick the new crop. And now we look back on those that bands calling this year their last, that withered… More »

Women Brawl, Break Up?

A couple months ago I interviewed Women guitarist/vocalist Patrick Flegel about quitting his job at a center for troubled kids. According to various online reports, it looks like he’s gone and quit his band, too. (Or is at least giving it a rest.) Bad puns are as unappealing as onstage meltdowns, but while touring for… More »

Women – “Eyesore”

In September, Calgary quartet Women follow their 2008 self-titled debut with Public Strain. Local pal Chad VanGaalen again produced. The collection offers moody, cold indie-rock repetitions that manage to remain catchy. In general, the feel’s worthy the bundled and blustery cover photo — take a listen to a relatively “sunny” moment, closing track “Eyesore.” It… More »

CMJ ’08: A Day With Women, Dan Friel & Chairlift, Brought To You By The Blogosphere

As the Times recently noted, bloggers are throwing shows and stuff! Ludlow Street during daylight hours on Tuesday was particularly rife with the WordPressers and Movable Typers, courtesy of Pop Tarts Suck Toasted and The Music Slut parties at Cake Shop and Pianos respectively. Parts & Laborer (and BTW) Dan Friel was first up for… More »
