“Gillian Was A Horse” has been floating around in one form or another since 2006, but its current, more polished state is what’s showing up on Damien Jurado’s next album Caught In The Trees, which was put together collaboratively with band members Eric Fisher and Jenna Conrad. The laid-back strummer opens at midnight, the protagonist tired of lying for someone and pretending to be their lover. He’s no lie detector, you see, some other “he”‘s no bullshit talker, and we’re told they both know “who knows what should be here known to all the onlookers.” The liar knows. Also, the town’s hopeless romantic dies alone in the carport of a local library. Otherwise, I’m still negotiating my way around the epiphany Jurado maps in the story.
