Longtime DFA-affiliate Nomi Ruiz earned a profile boost with her work on Andy Butler’s stellar Hercules & Love Affair LP, most memorably on the standout stomper “Hercules Theme.” Since then the H&LA camp’s divided: Butler’s working on a followup, retaining Kim-Ann Foxman but otherwise utilizing a “whole new cast of characters” (including a new co-producer), which has freed Ruiz, bassist Andrew Raposo, and keyboardist Morgan Wiley to focus on Jessica 6. Nomi’s new project is ostensibly named after a character from the sci-fi classic Logan’s Run, although the numerical suffix also conveniently recalls Prince’s Purple Rain protégés Vanity 6, the ’80s outfit that shares at least Jessica 6’s sense for fashion and genre-play, if not transgender-play. That sexed-up fashion sense is artfully framed in the official video for J6’s synth-smeared, sludge-guitared club cut “Fun Girl,” directed by Bijoux Altamirano (one of NYT’s Artists To Watch). The clip is the focus of a Deitch Projects-hosted premiere party at Santos Party House next Tuesday (12/22), but if your invite for shindig got lost in the mail we have it for you here, along with a remix from the relatively recently reactivated ’90s Illbient outfit Byzar.
“Fun Girls” is available as a limited edition 7″ b/w “Not Anymore,” and appears on the Fun Girls EP with a host of remixes including takes by Olivier Spencer, Germany’s Keinemusik, and that one by Byzar. A full-length Jessica 6 LP is due Spring 2010.
