Arbouretum Cover John Cale

Baltimore-based Thrill Jockey crew Arbouretum and recent psych-rock signees Pontiak, three brothers originally from Virginia currently residing in Brooklyn, have teamed up for a 7-song LP-only split EP called Kale. It includes both originals and John Cale covers … hence the name. Each band tries their hand at the man’s work: Arbouretum do a faithful rendition of the “Buffalo Ballet,” Pontiak tackle “The Endless Plain of Fortune” and “Mr. Wilson”. Kale was recorded at Pontiak’s home studio in Warrenton, VA. We have “Buffalo Ballet” as well as this photo of them in that home studio.

If you want to contract compare Cale’s with Arbouretum’s, please do. You can expect a new one from Arbouretum in early 2009. Pontiak’s second full-length Sun On Sun is out in September. You can hear a couple of their Kale tracks, including “The Endless Plain of Fortune,” at their MySpace.

Kale is out now via Thrill Jockey. The two bands are playing some shows together in September:
