L.A. beat-maker Shlohmo has teamed up with How To Dress Well for this warped, dense take on R&B: “Don’t Say No” is a good sign of what’s to come on the producer’s upcoming EP, Laid Out. As intense as things start out, it’s only a buildup as Shlohmo adds layer after layer of blurry synth smears, wailing guitars, and skittering drum-machine beats. HTDW’s Tom Krell’s voice sounds as gorgeous as expected, but he’s rarely reached the level of heartache he does here in the desperate, simple plea, “Say you want to stay.” It’s the perfect thing for a post-Valentine’s crash, and a welcome omen of what the future will bring from both of these guys.
