Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Flaming Lips Headlining GoogaMooga 2013

GoogaMooga 2013

Last year, Brooklyn welcomed the inaugural edition of Great GoogaMooga, a food and music festival run by the folks behind Bonnaroo (Superfly) in a large and beautiful space (Prospect Park) that ruled on paper but never quite lived up to its name. (The “Great” part, that is; jury’s out on how GoogaMooga it all was.) It was very Brooklyn in its irony, at least, in that it was the food festival that didn’t have enough food: No real vegetarian options, interminably long lines at food stands that ran out of food too quickly, and a $250 VIP experience with a similarly dire dearth of food products but plenty of watching Aziz, James Murphy, and David Chang eat. It was a tough hang! I roamed the fields and left starving.

In fairness to the festival: Aside from the $250 portion, it was free to enter and watch the many bands on the multiple stages; inside the $250 portion, the Marc Maron and Anthony Bourdain portions were extremely entertaining; and most importantly, GoogaMooga recognized their mistakes, refunded everyone’s VIP tickets, and promised a better experience this year. Now we find out if Brooklyn feels like forgiving. At Prospect Park on May 17-19, GoogaMooga returns, up to three days from two, with a solid lineup of bands — featuring Yeah Yeah Yeahs (with a new album and a great SXSW showing), The Flaming Lips, Matt & Kim, Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, The Darkness, Jovanotti, Father John Misty and De La Soul — and course corrections on all the things that went wrong last year. More veg. More value. And, from what I can tell, equal amounts of free (Saturday and Sunday). Friday will cost $50, though, and that’s when YYYs, the Lips, and the Darkness are on. Tix will be available on 3/28 at brooklyn.googamooba.com, where you will also be able to RSVP for the free days. Were you there, will you go back? The Superfly folks are smart, and run a special thing down in Tennessee. Odds are they do this right. WE’LL SEE.
