Crooks On Tape (Ex-Enon) – “If Feeings Mean A Thing” (Stereogum Premiere)

Before starting the spastic yet tuneful New York post-punk act Enon, John Schmersal was a member of Brainiac, the schizoid Dayton rock greats whose tenure was cut short far too early in 1997 due to frontman Tim Taylor’s death in a car crash. Enon went on to have a relatively illustrious career of their own before calling it quits in 2011. Now Schmersal has reunited with one of his original Enon bandmates from the pre-Toko Yasuda era, Rick Lee, to form Crooks On Tape. The band’s debut album, Fingerprints, finds them re-energized, working in the realm of spazzed-out strangeness that has become Schmersal’s signature sound. Lead single “If Feelings Mean A Thing” is a lurching-yet-kinetic falsetto burner that’s worth a spin, and you can do just that below.

Fingerprints is out 10/22 on Misra.
