Hear Tyler The Creator, Nick Cave, Katy Perry, And Others Cover “Daisy Bell”

Though it was a lovely little folk tune originating in 1892, “Daisy Bell (Bicycle Built For Two)” has been the subject of strange interpretations at least since Hal 9000 sang it in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Now artist Mark Ryden (whose influential album artwork includes Tyler, The Creator’s Wolf cover) has put together a compilation of very different artists performing covers of the song. In addition to Tyler (who samples Hal’s haunting rendition), it features Nick Cave, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Katy Perry, Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh, Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, and Danny Elfman. The release, titled The Gay Nineties Old Tyme Music: Daisy Bell, comes out in conjunction with Ryden’s new LA exhibit titled “The Gay Nineties” at the Kohn Gallery and will raise money for the charity Little Kids Rock. Below you can check out several of the covers, each with artwork provided by Ryden.
