Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments

It’s Governors Ball weekend, three days and nights when the epicenter of NYC’s music scene relocates from Brooklyn to Randall’s Island. This year’s lineup is stacked: the Strokes, Jack White, Vampire Weekend, Spoon, Deafheaven, OutKast (duh). Today’s already seen performances from Run The Jewels (who said onstage they’d have a new album “very fucking soon”) and Julian Casablancas (who said his album with the Voidz is out in September). Grimes goes on at the Gotham Tent shortly, and she’ll play three new songs, including one she wrote for Rihanna. We’ll have news and photos from the fest throughout the weekend. For now, watch a clip of the Voidz performance, then check out your best and worst comments of the week…

That is the best argument against feminism I’ve ever heard. I mean what if we get to a planet and they don’t even have men and women? What if they have three sexes? What if the women are oppressing the men? What then? INTERGALACTIC POSSIBILITIES, PEOPLE!!!! OPEN YOUR MINDS

his only claim to fame is covering a song by The Ataris. Lame.

His problem is his conception of covers replacing the original work. Like that “going to a museum and painting a mustache on a painting” — it’s like printing out a picture of a painting and drawing a mustache on that. The dude only sees the negatives of it and not the positive effect it could have in prolonging the life of his music. He really just wants it to be in a museum.

Trying to imagine a future in which I’m rich and old, younger people are interested in something I made and I get angry about it.

How many middle-adged dudes have made statements that include the words “…and that’s the problem with the younger generation…” while listening to The Eagles? They’re like the official band of “get off my lawn” fist-shakers everywhere.

THIS WEEK’S 5 LOWEST RATED COMMENTS

#5 Cerebus | Jun 5th Score:-15

Then why don’t the vast majority of them express it that way? Because truthfully, they don’t. Modern feminism is one of the most backbiting, twisted, confused and incestual of all social movements. It has not idea what it really is or what it really wants, but it sure as hell wants everybody to listen and do as they’re told. LDR’s statement is simplistic brilliance that more people would do well to adopt.

Trying to imagine a future in which I’m rich and old, younger people are interested in taking advantage of the ubiquity of something I made and reshaping to serve their own ends without my permission and I get angry about it.

How’s that?

I don’t get it, but then again I’m part of a (group of idiots).

Is that an okay rewrite?

How’s this?:

“That’s a problem with some of the [Bullins] generation, [we] don’t understand the concept of [mixtapes being released precisely because they can contain some elements of intellectual property and that they are released in the spirit of self-promotion and completely exploiting the ubiquitous familiarity of the underlying work in order to get people to listen to them further].”

(I love) Don Henley. He should feel (nonplussed) that anyone under the age of 50 gives a shit about his (pretty good) band.

How is that little rewrite? Okay?

THIS WEEK’S EDITOR-IN-CHIEF’S CHOICE

Wesley Morgan Paraham | May 31st Score:9

raptor you’re such a kiss ass. <3 u tho.

Anyway, me getting #2 this week reminds me of when my media writing professor a couple semesters ago asked the class if we’ve already been published somewhere. I hadn’t yet then, but I told him “Well, sometimes I write smart or funny comments on this music site and they pick the highest-voted ones at the end of the week and do a little page about it.” I showed him one and he was like “Yeah, this counts!”

Thanks for kickstarting my “writing” career, Stereogum!
