Tory Lanez – “Mama Told Me” (Stereogum Premiere)

One of the last things the promising young rapper/producer Tory Lanez says on “Mama Told Me” is “I’m a rich young nigga from the 416,” and yeah, his delivery is bound to remind you of Toronto’s most famous hip-hop export, especially when matched with the booming yet ethereal production he crafted alongside Ryan Hemsworth and Play Picasso. But there’s a frenetic urgency lingering underneath Lanez’s bars here that reminds me less of Drake than of one of Lanez’s early supporters, Meek Mill — fitting considering “Mama Told Me” feels both dreamy and nightmarish. The verbal jabs here unfurl in quick succession, and their cumulative effect knocks me out. Hear the song, from his upcoming Lost Cause project, below.
