The 5 Best Videos Of The Week

straight2video

This was a ridiculously stacked week, and there were plenty of truly badass videos that I just couldn’t find room for here. So: Apologies to Ryan Hemsworth, A$AP Rocky, King Tuff, Corbu, the Tropics, Ty Segall, ILoveMakonnen, and Caribou. You guys all have good videos but bad timing, at least as far as this list is concerned. This week’s five picks are below.

5. tUnE-yArDs – “Real Thing” (Dir. Tom Jobbins)

Merrill Garbus seems to be doing just fine with indie-rock, but she really missed her calling the day she decided not to become a silent-movie physical comedian.

4. Conway – “Shut Up” (Dir. Zak Stoltz)

The plot twist that arrives midway through is a thing of beauty. It’s a good thing Conway had so many stuntmen on the set.

3. Kindness – “This Is No About Us” (Dir. Adam Bainbridge & Daniel Brereton)

We need to collectively demand that our popular musicians become better dancers. Appreciating this Kindness video is a good place to start.

2. Pharrell – “Gust Of Wind” (Feat. Daft Punk) (Dir. Edgar Wright)

Even with the rhythmic gymnasts and the aerialists and Pharrell’s hat and the giant stone Easter Island Daft Punk spaceship heads, the thing about this video that sticks with me the most is the foliage. Welcome to fall, everybody!

1. Monster Magnet – “The Duke” (NSFW-ish) (Dir. Phil Mucci)

Look, I wasn’t expecting to put a Monster Magnet video at the top of this list any more than you were expecting to find one here. But then this dude used ultra-cheap digital effects to make a one-woman stoner Watchmen and racked up a whoa-per-minute ratio higher than anything I’ve seen in recent memory. If you can’t respect that, your whole perspective is wack. (This is also a good place to remind you that Monster Magnet’s “Space Lord” video is so awesome.)
