The New Basement Tapes – “Spanish Mary”

Lost On The River, the album on which an all-star cast of musicians recorded music based on unused Bob Dylan lyrics from The Basement Tapes sessions, is out in less than a month, and today the band — who call themselves the New Basement Tapes — have shared a third song from the project. It’s called “Spanish Mary,” and it features Rhiannon Giddens from the Carolina Chocolate Drops on lead vocals. Says Giddens in a press release, “Out of all the lyrics I looked through for the New Basement Tapes project, the one for ‘Spanish Mary’ attracted me first — here was a ballad, and I know ballads! It’s also set in the Caribbean, so I felt the deep African sound of the minstrel style banjo (circa 1856) was appropriate.” The music she and her crew came up with definitely sounds like something Dylan would write. Hear it below.

Lost On The River is out 11/11 on Harvest/Electromagnetic. Pre-order it here.
