Watch U2 Make Their Majestic Jools Holland Debut

U2 on Jools Holland

The British live-music TV show Later With Jools Holland has been airing on BBC Two since 1992, but U2 have somehow never appeared on the show until the most recent episode. On their episode of the show, U2 played “Volcano,” from their new album Songs Of Innocence, live for the first time. They also did an acoustic-plus-string-section version of the album track “Every Breaking Wave,” with the Edge on piano. And even as someone who’s on record as saying that Songs Of Innocence is crap, U2 are one of the greatest big-room live acts on planet Earth. Watching them playing live even in a TV studio, those songs take on a majesty and urgency that they didn’t (at least to my ears) have on the record. Watch both performances below.

Songs Of Innocence is out now and already in your iTunes. The band also played “California (There Is No End To Love)” on the show, but that won’t air until the next episode.
