Last year, Kevin Gates, a longtime rap hero in his Baton Rouge hometown, broke the fuck out nationally with his incredible mixtape The Luca Brasi Story. Gates has released a couple of other mixtapes since then, and they’ve been good. But in naming his new tape Luca Brasi 2, Gates is signaling to the world that he’s giving us something on the level of the scraggly hooks and underwater beats and emotional chest-ripping storytelling of that first Luca Brasi tape. On first listen, the new tape lives up to its title. We’ve posted the early tracks “Out The Mud,” “Perfect Imperfection,” and the August Alsina collab “I Don’t Get Tired.” The tape also has collaborations with Rich Homie Quan and K. Camp, as well as a beat from, weirdly, B.o.B. Check out the tape below.
