Near the beginning of 2014, the fearsome young Chicago rapper Lil Herb dropped his Welcome To Fazoland mixtape, one of the year’s best rap full-lengths. On Friday, Herb followed it up with a new tape called Pistol P Project, and you should definitely hear it. At just 10 tracks, Pistol P Project is a short tape, but it’s not a minor one. Instead, it’s blistering and intense, never really letting up. Katie Got Bandz and Zuse both show up, and both are on fire, but the tape is light on guests. Instead, it’s just Herb going in for the full duration. What makes Herb special is that he’s got all the scorched-earth nihilistic intensity of his young Chicago peers, but he’s also got the technical command and verbal dexterity that a rap classicist can appreciate. He’s a hell of a rapper, and he’s in top form on Pistol P Project. Check it out below.
