Marika Hackman once told me that she feels like her music is folk in a medieval sense, and that sticks with me every time I hear a new song from the steely-voiced singer. After a prolific outpouring of EPs, Hackman is finally releasing her debut album We Slept At Last, and in advance of that we are premiering one of the album’s previously unheard songs, “Monday Afternoon.” Hackman isn’t afraid to work the gruesome imagery of death and decay into her otherwise sprightly melodies, and the way she grapples with the physicality of human bodies works like shock treatment — lines like “the sickly sweet of my rotting skin” are jolting, but definitely evoke the medieval. When was the last time you heard someone sing about the sweet smell of death over flutes, strings and fingerpicking? Since the inception of Hackman’s solo career, she’s collaborated extensively with Charlie Andrew of Alt-J, and his knack for layered, moving parts has only helped enhance her spooky, terse songwriting.
