Steve Gunn & The Black Twig Pickers - "Trailways Ramble" (Stereogum Premiere)

After leaving his role as guitarist in Kurt Vile’s Violators and releasing his solo album Way Out Weather last fall, Pennsylvania-born, Brooklyn-based folk artist Steve Gunn has linked with the Appalachian string band Black Twig Pickers. Gearing up to release their collaborative album Seasonal Hire later this month, today they drop the single “Trailways Ramble.” The track slowly flows like an Ennio Morricone film score, with Gunn’s vocals easing in for two brief moments near the beginning and end. Fiddles, harmonicas, and the unconventionally rich sounds of the mouth and jaw harps meld together seamlessly, accompanied by only the most twangy of guitars and banjos. Gunn and The Black Twig Pickers are a perfect pairing; hear it for yourself below.

Seasonal Hire is out 2/24 on Thrill Jockey. Pre-order the album here.
