Judging from new LP Hello Hello, the Portland punks are steeped in that post-Springsteen punk tradition, with shades of everyone from Joe Strummer to Paul Westerberg to the Gaslight Anthem to Okkervil River to the Hold Steady in the mix. That continuum of hard-charging Americana runs deep, but Divers more than stay afloat (aquatic metaphor). Anthems like “Tracks” and “Wild Calling” could pass for pop-punk Arcade Fire, and I mean that in an entirely positive tone. And more than anybody, I hear the great Guelph post-punks Constantines and their potent “Springsteen-meets-Fugazi” reflected in this music’s hearty bellows and gleaming guitars. Hello Hello is an impressive introduction, so get familiar below.
