I dunno, I’m not getting the big deal over her costume. I mean, blackface itself is not inherently racist. It wasn’t being used for any mockery or minstrelry, and it wasn’t like she was being cast as a black person in a movie, instead of just casting a black person. This was a very specific, straightforward costume, with no demeaning or condescending undertones. I mean, it’s probably not the SMARTEST idea for a costume, but I don’t see anything wrong with it.

[Ed. Note: While I’m not sure that blackface isn’t inherently racist, I think most agree that it is inherently disrespectful and that you inherently should just not do it especially if you are inherently a public figure because inherently eeeeeeeeek. Just don’t. The argument to allow white people to wear blackface if they don’t mean it in a mocking way seems, to me, very similar to the argument to allow white people to say the N word if they’re not being, you know, rude about it. Just don’t? Why do you need to? Just don’t! Be quiet and don’t!]

I thought she was working as a super in order to have more time to stay home and work on her next play inspired by all the wedding photographs she takes of people wearing shoes with beepers in them.
