Monsters’ Ball: The Week’s Best Comments

You know what’s cool and also the best? When something that was written a long time ago still holds up and feels totally relevant and even modern. It’s like magic! I put off seeing The Graduate for years because it seemed like some dumb old movie that my stepdad liked to reference at the dinner table, and then I actually saw it and it’s easily one of my favorite three movies of all time. It’s great! And you can see its fingerprints all over so many other movies that you love. Similarly, a friend recently recommended Nathaniel West’s novel, The Day of the Locust, and OK I have not finished reading it, so maybe the second half of the book is just so outdated and arcane and you throw the book in the fireplace because you’re like NICE TRY, GRANDPA, WHO’S YOUR ROBOT JEWEL THIEF FRIEND? But so far it’s great and actually has a very modern, proto-Brett Easton Ellis feel. Like, in one of the earliest scenes of the book an entire dinner party leaves the host’s house to go to a brothel and watch old pornos. The book was written in 1939! So those are two recommendations for you of old things that don’t feel so old.

Between this, the gay oreo kerfuffle on facebook, and the group protesting General Mills for supporting same-sex marriage, this has been a banner week for eye rolling. I’m not saying that it is definitely a ploy by optometrists to create need for their services after an eye sprain epidemic, but that is definitely what is happening.

Also, in your face Chuck Norris. The only person I knew who was active in the scouts and became an eagle scout is gay*. THE GAYS ARE CALLING FROM INSIDE THE BOY SCOUTS.

*Hi if you are reading this and know I am me and you are you!

It seems like a lot of Twitter eulogizing is just an attempt to “first” everyone else in revealing the bad news.

I DON’T disagree with YOU GABE OL’ buddy, but THERE SURE IS something odd about USING THE death of someone as A PLATFORM to write about HOW THE INTERNET is the worst thing FOR EULOGIZING on your own BLOG.
