Lady Gillian Anderson: What Could Have Been

Even though each and every one of us has just started watching Downton Abbey for the Videogum TV Club and none of us have ever seen anything past the fourth episode of the first season and we can’t even imagine what’s going to happen next, RIGHT?, I think it’s still safe to say that we’re pretty set on the actors portraying each of the characters. Who else could be bitchy Thomas if not BITCHY THOMAS? Who else could be terrible O’Brien? Beautiful Sybil? Nothing Edith? And who else could be Lady Cora, if not Agent Scully from X-Files wait WHA-WHA-WHAAAAAAT?! From The Huffington Post:

In a new interview with TV Guide Magazine, “The X-Files” star said she was offered a part in the period drama that has taken America by storm.

When Anderson was asked about the crossover success of “Downton” and whether it would help other British projects in the states — particularly her upcoming adaptation of “Great Expectations” — the actress said, “Hopefully people will embrace it with the same love that flowed toward ‘Downton Abbey.’ I was actually offered a part in ‘Downton.'”

Anderson confirmed she was offered the role of Lady Cora Crawley, which is currently played by Elizabeth McGovern.

WHOA. The truth is out there! That that wouldn’t have been that great, probably! And we’re all glad that it didn’t happen! Nothing against Gillian Anderson, I’m sure she’s lovely! But I like the Cora that we have now! She looks like Mary!
