Not Your Older Sibling’s Vacation Franchise!

About two years ago, there were rumors and reports going around that John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein were trying to get a reboot of the National Lampoon’s Vacation series off the ground. “What an idea,” everyone thought. “That is certainly an idea, and you guys have certainly had it. No one can tell anyone that that is NOT an idea.” And now, two years later, it looks like they’re back on track! Oh, good? From Variety:

New Line is getting closer to getting back on the road with the Griswolds as the studio has begun negotiations with John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein to helm another trip to the “Vacation” franchise.

The writing team penned the script for the studio, but were also eyeing the opportunity to direct. The two met last week with New Line Prexy Toby Emmerich, who was so impressed with their take that he tapped the duo to helm as well.

The original series follows quirky dad Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) and his family on several types of vacations. Latest version will follow Rusty, Clark Griswold’s son, who now has his own family misadventures on the holiday road. It is unknown yet if Chase will return to the role he made famous — or if Clark is even a part of the new story.

The important thing to remember is that no one can take the old Vacation movies from us. They will always exist positively in our childhood memories. It does seem a little early to reboot a beloved franchise that died only about ten years ago, but, you know, we’re not the bosses of everything. We can’t say when is TOO EARLY to reboot a beloved franchise that died about ten years ago because people kind of stopped beloving it so much. Plus, we like John Francis Daley, right? Remember how cute he was on that show? Really, the only thing we CAN do in this situation is recast the Griswolds for ourselves. Duh. So why aren’t we doing that yet? IT’S THE ONLY THING WE CAN DO!

Grown-Up Rusty: Jason Bateman
Rusty’s Wife: Amy Poehler
Rusty’s Daughter: Birdie
Rusty’s Son: Andy Milonakis

WHOA! What a great job. Beautiful, beautiful casting. I dare anyone to try to do even a slightly better job recasting the Griswold family for the Rusty Griswold reboot, and I dare you because YOU CANNOT!
