Monsters’ Ball: The Week’s Best Comments

Since Monsters’ Ball is kind of where we take care of in-house business, let’s take care of some in-house business, right? Basically, it is time to be honest with ourselves and with each other about the fact that Videogum is a blog in an Internet of blogs, and that the Internet of blogs runs on an open-circuit system of interconnected tools for disseminating information. I guess what I’m trying to say is how do we get more Twitter followers? And what should we do to improve Videogum’s “Facebook experience”? Let’s pretend that there was a Videogum application for your telephone. What would that application do? You get the idea. These could be perceived as embarrassing questions, because aren’t we all supposed to not care about that stuff and isn’t life just about letting the events of the world wash over you, dude? NO! No shame. It’s a new semester (LOL) and it is time for us to start thinking about how to make what we all spend way too much of our time doing even bigger and better, right? Right. So: please help. Consider it extra credit, and other jokes about school. Thank you in advance for your help, guys. Check plus plus. Two gold stars. Recess.

So Photoshopping the heads of actors onto photos of genocidal atrocities in which innocent children are mercilessly tortured and probably killed is what passes for humour on the Internet now?

[Ed. note: HI GUYS! So, I suppose we all need to clear the air a little bit? Just in time for  the weekend! I bet if we didn’t clear the air right now, people wouldn’t even sleep at all, they’d just spend the whole weekend on the bathroom floor. Anyway, I’m not going to defend or explain posting that photo. SORRY. You’re all going to have to dealwithit.gif. Although, I certainly understand anyone being bothered by it, or at least not finding it funny. I would like to clarify to anyone who is confused that I did not actually MAKE that picture, but I did post it. I definitely posted it, that is very true. Everyone had some very serious and very intense things to say about how the whole thing made them felt, and as always, I enjoy and respect the commentary and criticism. So good work everyone. Everyone continues to do the difficult work of trying to figure out what it all MEANS, and that’s great. At the end of the day, of course, I don’t really think that Internet memes and the human cost of wars have anything to do with each other, even when they overlap somehow. Because the truth is they do not overlap. (I also like rape jokes and 9/11 jokes sometimes, even though I hate rape and 9/11 always. But now I am getting into the “explaining and defending” territory that I wanted to avoid.) In closing, though, I would just like to say that because we are not going to solve the impossible tragedy of what it means to live in a violent and absurd world, and because we are also not going to be put in charge of how the Internet works, I hope that we can at least all move forward together. Let’s keep going, you guys. Also, I made this for all of you.]
