LA hip-hop is in a rebuilding period much like the city’s beloved, but beleagured Lakers. Although DJ Mustard’s beats have ruled the radio for well over a year, it is hard to find Angeleno voices that have a steady presence on the radio and in the public consciousness other than Kendrick Lamar and YG. Young buck Wes Period has maintained a healthy buzz despite only releasing sporadic tracks since 2011’s breakout Friendly Fire EP. Today, the LA spitter hits us with an early summer anthem in the smooth, cooing one-off “Lilac Rose.” A soulful, precisely chopped sample and classic drum break is the platter Period uses to serve an invitation to a lady-friend to “spend all winter in our swimming clothes” before Fat Tony pursues his girl and things get delightfully jazzy with some brass before the fadeout.
