Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments

This week we ranked Ariel Pink’s albums and March’s metal tracks. GY!BE had our Album Of The Week and Speedy Ortiz dropped our favorite new song. We took Mountain Goats’ John Darnielle to his first pro wrestling show in 35 years. And we scratched our heads after Jay Z and his 16 star equity partners rebranded another streaming music service and awkwardly asked us to join the revolution. Also happy birthday to Guided By Voices’ Alien Lanes, which came out 20 years ago today!

THIS WEEK’S 10 HIGHEST RATED COMMENTS

Did you watch the event? For me, it’s the language around how they presented it, particularly when positioning this as the streaming solution that is _finally_ beneficial to the artist all without ever mentioning just, you know, _how_ it was going to be that. Couple that with no free option, which seems impressively short-sighted, the whole thing just felt like a lot of successful musicians (many of them good! but still) congratulated themselves for being friends with one another and spending money on a purchasing a business.

Take that self importance and throw in an obnoxious viral campaign that co-opts the norms of political and social support movements on social media (again, for a business) and baby, you got a backlash going.

Someday someone will write a fascinating novel about Jack White’s transformation into a living Johnny Depp character.

Hey guys! As a revolt to the TIDAL movement, let’s all change our Stereogum profile avatars to broken jpeg image icons!

DAMN! You guys are quick!

Fuck this shit. Fuck them using “The National Anthem.” Is Radiohead on board with this whole thing? Everything about it screams the exact bullshit that caused them to pull all their stuff from Spotify in the first place. I suddenly have less respect for everyone on that stage.

I know it’s the typical nature with PR things, but man, did they really couch this in a lot of revolutionary, self congratulatory rhetoric about this “continuing journey” that was super annoying. I hope this thing fails.

And people need to stop cherry picking Nietzsche quotes.

……So the founding members all got the same equity, and now we have a second round and everyone gets the same in that one as well, but it’s not as large as the first tier. We want to keep it going. We want to make this thing successful and then create another round and another round. That’s the dream, that’s the utopia”

That’s the most half assed description of a “Pyramid Scheme” I have ever fucking heard.

I’m familiar with Imagine Dragons. Is Imagine Banksy a side project?

(tee hee). I’m the cutest fucking thing EVER.

#4 jasonwaterfalls | Apr 1st Score:-9

A few noteworthy artists that have been around awhile and get a “best songs of”, while a fairly un-noteworthy (see comment about internet drama) artist gets a “best albums of”. I am disappoint.

10 best Marvin Gaye songs
10 best Nirvana songs
10 best TVOTR songs
10 best Tori Amos songs (still better than Ariel Pink)
10 best Strokes songs

All of these artists warrant a modicum of body of work evaluation. Ariel Pink makes blog-hype bullshit.

GFY stereogum.

Wilco should stick to their music ………………… I don’t need any assistance, one way or the other, from them.

adding the fact that you gave carrie and lowell premature evaluation and that’s the reason it’s not album of the week, something you literally never fail to clearly delineate immediately in these write ups

but it’s none of my business

Sticking to my gums, “To Pimp A Butterfly” is pretentious tripe. “Forest Hills Drive” is way superior.
