Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments

My favorite thing we published this week was an investigation into VNYL, a crowdfunded and widely publicized “Netflix for vinyl” curatorial service that turned out to be a Venice Beach retail store’s scam to unload random, ancient LPs on mail-order subscribers for $24/month (with no option to return them as was promised). Between Record Store Day and Urban Outfitters and sketchy startups like VNYL, many of the new business concerns popping up around the so-called vinyl resurgence are bad news for labels, indie shops, and customers alike. Anyway, read our article here. And see you back here Sunday night!

THIS WEEK’S 10 HIGHEST RATED COMMENTS

Dave Chandler | May 10th Score:20

Every time she gets billed as “star of Portlandia” instead of “singer/guitarist of Sleater Kinney” I die a little on the inside.

You’re right, that song would be a solid choice for the wistful finale montage.

I’m genuinely happy the man has found some peace. But that picture of him sitting serenely with a bible next to a cattail covered pond is just too damn much.

Without Idol there never would have been Kelly Clarkson or “Since U Been Gone,” without “Since U Been Gone” no crown jewel for poptimism, no solidification of the Max Martin / Dr. Luke axis – who knows, w’ere talking about a whole alternate universe of pop at this point, one that probably doesn’t include Haim or the monogenre or T-Swift going pop or acts like Grimes, Sky Ferreirra, Charli XCX catching on in indie. This show is basically ground zero for poptimism, love it or hate it. It’s mad influential, no matter how lame it is/was.

People who don’t know Tyler must think there are a lot of bicurious golfers out there

Look, I don’t even like this guy’s music, and he’s really nothing to me but a punk kid. GET OFF MY LAWN! But in no universe can this be described as a “screed.” How short are our attention spans anyway? It’s a paragraph. It’s of a reasonable length and it focuses on one topic. You don’t have to accept his use of the image or that he’s not homophobic, but it’s easy enough to follow his thought process.

#5 String on my finger | May 11th Score:-12

Truly you are why I weep for millennials. BTW, I LOVED Claire Lobenfeld and her writing.

I hear you Scruffy. But I’ve been attacked for having earnest opinions about things. And the writers like to have double standards. Like that gal Caitlan with her ageism/reverse racism articles about ”old white men” and all that bull. I like Michael Nelson and the more thoughtful writers to be fair. But I’ve been accused of never knowing what racism is because I’m white, been simply negative voted for saying that an artist is over rated and even insulted. Back in 2010 I used this board regularly and it was a bit of a different place. I don’t like to play nice anymore.

I’m fine that you loathe me- In fact, I relish it. I love being loathed for being such a prickly pear and hope you feel every single needle. May you regularly be one that follows my every comment with an ever-present hungry intention to press the negative button. It gets me hot 😉

How blown is Wayne, he’s not going to look like he knew something everyone else didn’t and was an innovator for working with Miley; it’s just going to be remembered that his relationship with Miley was particularly creepy and that his music collaborations will probably be go down as some of her lamest. Wayne was cool than he started begging to be cool and then he wasn’t as cool anymore. 🙁

Mike Pop | May 8th Score:-21

I think it’s nice that she’s all about causes and working with more respectable artists now, but I still can’t shake my undeniable hatred for her. Like she really just fucking sucks. I can’t see her doing this on her own; someone’s gotta be whispering what to do in her ear.
