Portastatic – “An Elegant Chaos” (Julian Cope Cover)

Mac McCaughan is the kind of man whose reputation is so laden with history it precedes him like a trumpet blast — Superchunk/Portastatic founding member, head honcho at the iconic Merge Records, and most recently, his first solo album under his own name, Non-Believers. Though that record came out a little under a month ago, he’s uploaded a gem from the past to SoundCloud for the first time today. “An Elegant Chaos” is his version of a Julian Cope song that he’d only released via Portastatic’s cassette-only Spillage tape from 2009. Now, this scratchy and warm bit of existential sidelining has been ushered into a 21st century format. Listen.
