Oscar Scheller blends the earnest balladry of the barbershop quartet era with laptop-pop slickness. His new EP Beautiful Words contains sweeping, poignant ballads like its title track and glitchy, R&B-indebted jams like “Daffodil Days“. I hear Morrissey’s shaggy sadness haunting Oscar’s vocal style, but that’s certainly not a bad reference for a London bedroom-pop singer to incorporate. This EP just keeps expanding, though, like on “Told Me So,” which splits a twee chorus with a fuzzed-out guitar line, perfectly toeing the line between earnest and deadpan.
