Skepta – “Back Then”

The London grime rapper Skepta has been on a serious roll lately, releasing great tracks like “Shutdown” and “Lukey World” even if his new album still isn’t anywhere in sight. His latest is “Back Then,” in which he tweaks Mike Jones’ old “back then they didn’t want me” line while producer Plastician puts a grime spin on “Still Tippin’,” the 2005 Mike Jones/Slim Thug/Paul Wall Houston rap classic. Grime and Houston rap are practically polar opposites, but Skepta manages to make the track his own. Listen to it below.
