Father – “Cheap Thrills” Video

Atlanta trap-whisperer Father used some sort of pitch-shift software on his voice for “Cheap Thrills,” and oddly enough, it makes him sound akin to fellow southern maestro Makonnen. While it’s a great gimmick, I’ve become so accustomed to his sleepy-eyed rap growl that the pop sensibility of it is a bit jarring. Even if his voice sounds foreign, the subject matter is the same: sex without desire, hedonism born from boredom, parties half-full of half-empty ennui and an underlying sense of the ominous. It’s not as catchy as anything off Father’s latest crew tape Who’s Gonna Get Fucked First, but it’s still worth hearing, if only for the vocal antics. Watch it below.
