Kevin Morby – “Moonshiner”

Kevin Morby – “Moonshiner”

Kevin Morby, formerly of Woods and occasionally of the Babies, has now released two lovely albums of comfortable, introspective folk-rock, with a third on the way — pretty soon, people will stop needing to introduce him by name-checking his other projects. Although Morby’s first LP for Indiana label Dead Oceans won’t be out until next year, we don’t even have to wait that long for new material, as he’s putting out a new 7″ this fall. The a-side is the reliably great “Moonshiner,” an unhurried rocker built around acoustic guitar strums, a bouncing bassline, and piano flourishes. Like all of Morby’s work, it’s unshowy but sonically rich, finding some very welcome room for a couple of warm harmonica breaks. “I wrote ‘Moonshiner’ a few years ago after reading what has become one of my favorite contemporary books: The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt,” Morby writes. “The book was very inspiring to me at that time and it pulled a few different songs out of me — ‘Moonshiner’ being the most directly influenced.” Listen below.

“Moonshiner” b/w “Bridge To Gaia” is out 9/4 via Dead Oceans. Pre-order it here.
