Foxing – “The Magdalene”

“The Magdalene” is the first single we’ve heard from St. Louis’ Foxing since they reissued The Albatross last year, and it marks a towering, majestic return. This is a song about Catholic guilt, and Foxing more than hint at that with both the title and its inaugural lyrics: “I’m going down with a rosary.” Connor Murphy told NPR that the song is about committing a sin and trying to document the mistake after the fact:

I was raised in Catholic school [which] imposed a very difficult stance on the freedom of sexuality… When I lost my virginity, I felt like it was less about love and more about sin. I have really never let go of or dealt with that guilt, which made it dark to write about. I think of “The Magdalene” as a retrospective diary entry after losing my virginity.

Murphy’s voice unfurls in melodic peals as he describes his undoing. Foxing will release their forthcoming album, Dealer, this October; listen to the first single below.

Dealer is out 10/30 via Triple Crown Records.
