Mammatus - "Ornia" (Stereogum Premiere)

The crashing wave and crystal blue sky on the cover of Mammatus’ forthcoming 2xLP Sparkling Waters evoke the beach-bum scenery of Santa Cruz, California, where the three members reside, but it only hints towards the widescreen proportions of lead single “Ornia.” The track is a spaced-out, proggy soundscape of heavy metal riffs and beachy ambiance, all packaged into a smooth and satisfying 17-minute trip. It’s also not the first epic Mammatus has spun. They’ve been weaving sprawling, acid-dripped journeys since 2005 — most recently 2013’s Heady Mental — and have gained a devoted cult following throughout the years. Their upcoming fourth album Sparkling Waters promises to be their most ambitious yet, so grab some decent headphones, slink back, and check it out for yourself.

Sparkling Waters is out 11/20 on Spiritual Pajamas.
