Tinashe is in full promo mode for her upcoming album Joyride after a bit of a delay. She’s released a slew of good singles including “Ride of Your Life,” “Energy,” and “Party Favors.” But she also found time to join SZA and Dej Loaf to sing “Killing Me Softly” for an NY Times earring pictorial. Today, as Spin points out, another on-off has surfaced aside from Joyride in a cool cover of Tom Tom Club’s 1981 cosmic funk anthem “Genius Of Love.”
Along with DJ Cassidy, who injects the original with some Caribbean-tinged synth revolutions and more space age funk, Tinashe sings a fun, bouncy version of the lyrics, interjecting some phrases of her own and moving the track along with some old school party ad-libs. Seems like the sultry R&B singer is on a roll just in time to kick off her world tour. Hear the song below as well as the Target commercial from whence it came.
Joyride is out soon on RCA.
