Shut Up, Dude: This Week’s Best And Worst Comments

This morning I stopped by the LES gallery space where Album Of The Week lightning rods the 1975 had set up a slick pop-up shop to take selfies with and sell $70 hoodies to aqua-haired teens. It was lively, and congrats to these guys on their sophomore album bump. The Manchester synth-rockers have inspired so much grousing from Stereogum readers in the comments this week and I get why. But while I won’t claim the 1975 are intentionally trolling you, some of the over-the-top aspects of this LP (e.g., the ludicrous title, the 74-minute running time, the ambient opening track named after the band) should clue you in that they enjoy provoking people. So just ignore frontman Matt Healy’s preening if you want and consider undeniable songs like the cinematic new wave ballad “Somebody Else” and gospel-tinged disco singalong “The Sound.” The album’s other singles — starlet-teasing “Love Me” and wry gak jam “UGH!” — are even more fun, even if they do mimic INXS and Scritti Politti, respectively. It’s not like “robotic Huey Lewis” is a sound anyone trying to climb the charts these days would gravitate toward, so I respect the homage. (Less successful perhaps are echoes of forgotten British pop acts like Go West, Johnny Hate Jazz, and the Escape Club … bands only last relevant the year Healy was born for a reason.) ILIWYSFYASBYSUOI is a breath of fresh air and I for one think we should welcome our bloated yuppie pop overlords. Or, you know, you can stick with your DIIV stream.

How much greater would this AOTW post be if we saw the 1975 get the nod, clicked the article and the entire body was:

I’ve heard it.

Word? I didn’t know DGiHAOTTWPoR8TUtaItHMoVMGDPLMitMotLRFTM had a new album coming this week. I know their reputation has taken a hit since their (underrated imho) self-titled sophomore album, but you’d think they’d still warrant a mention in “other albums of note.”

If this was my first time visiting this site, I’d think I was being trolled.

I don’t really have a problem with these dudes as AOTW even tho my personal vote would’ve gone to dear god in heaven anything other that this wretched piece of recycled 80’s tripe up to and including the huge mass of vomit my great dane puppy left me in the middle of the living room floor this morning but I can see the logic in giving it to these guys as well.

C’mon guys. The job of an attorney is to provide a defense for their client. Everyone deserves a fair trial, no matter how sure we are that they are guilty.

How disappointing of her. I’d hope she’d be smart to stay outta the fray, but, oh well. Let’s judge and jury Dr. Luke some more…cause Lena Dunham.

Wow, I’m truly astonished by the overall pretentious negativity here in the comments section of Stereogum. Yes, The 1975 surely isn’t pop gold, and yes, The 1975 might have a certain target audience, but nonetheless – like Tom Breihan writes – this band’s sophomore LP is definitely worth a spin; it’s got some fresh poppy peppiness with very tolerable lyrics which will make your head guaranteedly bop and instantly put you in an upbeat mood (that is, if you’re not a pompous sourpuss like many of the people on here appear to be.) This board seems to be full of shortsighted wannabe semi-intellectuals pretending to be the open-minded free spirits who they’re actually not, and it’s a shame really. “The magic happens outside of our comfort-zone,” like a random, famous, wise person once said on some arbitrary tumblr page…
