SXSW Band To Watch: PWR BTTM

Andrew Piccone

Ahead of South By Southwest, Stereogum is highlighting a handful of our Band To Watch alumni who have busy schedules at this year’s festival. If you’re in Austin this week, now’s your chance to actually watch some Bands To Watch.

We’ve given PWR BTTM more than enough shine since we named them a Band To Watch a little over a year ago. Since then, the duo’s released their debut album, Ugly Cherries — an uncompromisingly fun and often poignant take on love, identity, and all the rest — and toured on bills with the likes of Amanda Palmer and Ra Ra Riot plus headlined many stellar lineups of their own.

That inimitable live set will undoubtedly be the focus of their SXSW buzz, and their performances are not to be missed. And what better way to experience it than in sweaty industry showcases shoved in between 10 other bands? Just kidding! The band’s rapid-fire wit and enlivening energy are sure to perk up the often sleepy and hungover Austin suitcase crowd, and the traditionally 20-minute-long sets give them more than enough time to run through the hits and engage in some of their bitingly sarcastic banter.

PWR BTTM’s visuals so far — for “1994,” “Ugly Cherries,” and, most recently, the desert-chic “West Texas” — hint at some of the creativity behind their gloriously campy aesthetic, but it’s only something you can truly appreciate IRL. The band has made a loose promise via Twitter — a place where most lies are bred — that they’ll be serving a different look at each of their seven shows, so what better excuse do you need to just follow them around all week and try to catch every set? (And if you need to pick just one, have it be our Austin Invasion with Exploding In Sound.) You won’t regret it. Check out all their SX performances below.
