On their 2015 debut, Turn To Each Other, Massachusetts trio And The Kids created a unique and dizzyingly fantastical world made up of tightly-coiled rock that threatened to unspool at every turn. Their follow-up to that record, Friends Share Lovers, will come out in June, and sees the band becoming even more ambitious, doubling down on the intricately laid-out soundscapes of their debut. “Kick Rocks,” the lead single, starts with a chirpy refrain that’s carried throughout: “I’m gonna die/ I’m gonna get old/ I’m gonna find someone else to live here.” Vocalist and guitarist Hannah Mohan lets out every word with a sneer, as the rest of the band helps her to establish some irresistible harmonies. The song speaks to displacement and moving on, and Mohan feels confident enough to keep moving forward: “Don’t say it is honorable to try/ ‘Cus you think our generation is pretty shy/ I’d say nothing is going to go away, considering our generation is pretty brave.” A rallying cry wrapped up in an idiosyncratic package — seems to sum up this generation pretty well.
