All People – “Slow,” “Plain Essential Language,” & “Naught” (Stereogum Premiere)

New Orleans DIY band All People have released the first three songs off their upcoming self-titled album. The band comprises Daniel “D-Ray” Ray and Greg Rodrigue, the founders of indie and punk rock label Community Records, and on their upcoming album they delve into an experimental, emotive sound. This music creates an introspective feeling both sonically and lyrically to explore the frustration that comes from having a lack of control.

“Slow,” the first song on the album, builds on a pervasive ambient guitar rhythm, also incorporating a progression of bright keys and comforting horns to contrast the song’s vocal and sonic intensity. Similarly, “Plain Essential Language” fuses gentle dream-pop keys and synthesizers with an abundance of alternative rock electricity to generate a variety of complex feelings. “Naught,” the third track on the album, is equally as powerful and reflective but conveys this reflection in a different way, with a more controlled, repetitive rhythm that grows into a lively, crashing chorus of longing.

While these three songs may feel as if they are spinning out of control through their lyrics and arrangement, in actually, they are a positive force of energy. Despite our anxieties and the outside forces that lead our lives down unexpected paths, All People have illustrated that clarity and hope can always be found within ourselves.
