Kikagaku Moyo is a Tokyo-based band that makes “feeling good music” with a psychedelic flair and a distantly upbeat demeanor. They’re quite good at what they do, not to mention incredibly prolific: Having put out their first album in 2013, House In The Tall Grass is the band’s fourth full-length in addition to a couple 7″ splits with the likes of Kinski and Moon Duo.

A ’60s psych throwback, this album utilizes a poignant balance of folk, pop, and jam-band influences, adapting them to fit within the context of modern music. That M.O. materializes in the form of classic, crunchy guitar tones, a sitar, and quiet acoustic interludes, all coming together through a thick layer of reverb. Adding some Tame Impala-meets-Junip vocals to the mix, Kikagaku Moyo create a work that can be likened to the Shins just as easily as it can to throwback acts like Les Rallizes Dénudés.
