Xiu Xiu – “Into The Night” Video

Avant-pop group Xiu Xiu announced a Twin Peaks cover album in which they reimagine Angelo Badalamenti’s iconic score from David Lynch’s cherished TV show and repackage it as Plays The Music Of Twin Peaks. We’ve already heard the Julee Cruise cover “Into The Night,” and today director Diego Barrera has given it a powerful, provocative visual treatment. Distorted, lo-fi images with beautifully muted colors for an infrared feel slowly unfold Barrera’s rendition of an alchemical siren — a medieval legend of a beautiful woman with a disturbing tendency to transform into a serpent from the waist down while bathing. Here’s what Barrera had to say about the clip:

[The video is] Alchemy that I combine with a feminist message, feminism that understands masculinity and femininity as social constructs that each society draws upon depending on its own interests, where we can rebuild these concepts in the way we want it. Opening the possibility that personal growth signifies a necessary break with our child universe, where the starting point of all humans is their assimilation of similarities and differences to the maternal figure, so that we may dare to think of ourselves with a reference that is divine, extending beyond gender – neither masculine nor feminine – real liberation, defined by each in their own way.

Watch.

Plays The Music Of Twin Peaks is out 4/16 via Polyvinyl in the US and Bella Union in Europe.
