Kali Uchis has been building steam for a few years now, but the squelchy synth-R&B jam “Only Girl” is the song that’s really clicking for me. Partially that’s because of all the killer talent she assembled for the track — Katytrana production plus features from Steve Lacy and Vince Staples — and partially it’s because she’s the same winsome performer she’s always been, an understated singer whose effortless delivery incorporates traces of hip-hop, R&B, and bubblegum pop. The new video Uchis directed for “Only Girl” further cements my appreciation for what she’s doing. Check it out.
