Most of us know Kristin Welchez as Dee Dee, frontwoman of the Dum Dum Girls. But for a new album that’s coming out later this month, Welchez has adapted a new persona. She’s now making slickly tender ’80s-style synthpop under the name Kristin Kontrol, and she’ll release X-Communicate, her debut album under that persona, later this month. We’ve posted the early tracks “X-Communicate” and “Show Me,” and now she’s also shared the grand, sighing ballad “Don’t (Wannabe).” It’s a great song, one that could easily be a Dum Dum Girls single if she replaced all those precise keyboards with reverbed-out guitars. (And there are some reverbed-out guitars in the mix, as well, in this version.) Check it out below.
