ALA.NI – “Suddenly” (Remix) Feat. Chester Watson (Stereogum Premiere)

West London singer-songwriter ALA.NI creates provocative songs with a retro, jazzy flavor reminiscent of Lena Horne. She recently completed the season cycle with her Summer, Spring, Autumn, and Winter and the songs range in mood and aesthetic from the dead, somber cold of winter to the bouncy ebullience of summer. On her upcoming album, You & I, she’s gathered that varied, scattered body of work into one grand collection of songs due this summer. The album will also feature six remixes from her catalog. One such remix is Chester Watson’s take on her Summer cut “Suddenly” and it comes today along with a visual counterpart.

The original song is a slow, piano-driven throwback with nothing but her divine voice and lush chords. Watson’s remix keeps those same chords, speeds them up, punctuates them with knocking boom bap drums, and darkens the mood like a cold desert night after a bright, scorching day. The matching self-directed clip is eerie and haunting. Shot in disused railway arches in the bowels of East London, ALA.NI utilizes a deft manipulation of light and shadow to get lost in a haze of smoke as Watson’s somber verses illustrate a vivid picture of solitary confinement and contemplation. My goosebumps still haven’t completely gone away. Peep it.
