Dannika Horvat, who records as Dannika, seems to be on a winning streak lately. After releasing the single “Next to You” in April, the Melbourne-based musician won best director at the city’s Queer Film Festival for her movie The Summer Of ABC Burns, and today she’s releasing a brand new EP titled For Peaches. Recorded with the members of Good Morning, the combination of Dannika’s sleepy vocal melodies and twangy guitar accompaniments gives her music a stripped-down aesthetic easily likened to a cross between Mazzy Star and the Velvet Underground. Though her orchestration isn’t overwhelmingly complex, this setup gives each song enough room to make Dannika’s lyrics the focal point of the EP. From more upbeat tracks like “Saint Kilda Sunrise” and “Cake” to the pithy and nostalgic “Next to You,” these songs bring new life to a lo-fi pallet. Listen below.
