Mild High Club make smooth, psychedelic jazz/funk infusions with spacey tinges that sound like warped AM radio hits from another galaxy. A year after signing to Stones Throw, moving out to LA, and dropping the stellar debut, Timeline, the outfit is back with another full-length offering entitled Skiptracing. The lead single is “Homage,” a bouncy, mid-tempo churner with loose jazz flourishes, bright piano hits, contorted synths, and super groovy bass. Founder and vocalist Alexander Brettin brings smooth, wandering melodies that weave in and out of the synths interlocking like a DNA ladder. Seemingly inspired by his new surroundings in the City of Angels, this sounds like it was made in the deep, dark basement of the Griffith Observatory’s planetarium tripping on angel dust when he sings “Come on it’s a city dream/ Dreaming of the imagery I’ve found.” And that’s meant in the best way possible.
