Kiran Leonard – “Coayacán”

Kiran Leonard – “Coayacán”

Manchester singer-songwriter Kiran Leonard released the stellar Grapefruit LP, a collection of Swans/Deerhoof/Radiohead-inspired forward-leaning jams, this past March. Though it’s only been five months, his first recording since then, and the first from a collection of “your classic outtakes and odd ends sort of release” called Garden In Bermuda, sounds like a departure that was years in the making. “Coayacán” is a short, glitchy, hip-hop-leaning joint with jerky, J Dilla-esque chops of classical flourishes strung together, intricate percussion, and Leonard’s smooth tenor gliding above it all. The off-time-on-purpose feel makes for a beautiful incongruity with the silky texture of his voice. Here’s what Leonard says the track is about: “Trotsky + his wife, at home in Mexico City, lamenting infighting on the left, in spite of a beautiful world rampant with tyrants.” Listen.
