Chasms – “Black Ice”

Kristin Cofer

Chasms is the San Francisco-based duo of Jess Labrador and Shannon Madden. They conjure beautifully dark, transfixing songs with a deft control of mood and evocative sentiment. Their proper full-length debut, On The Legs Of Love Purified, is out in a couple months. An early taste of the album comes in the brooding “Black Ice.” Labrador’s haunting, chilling harmonies float above moody, sustained, subtly distorted power chords and heavy drums, combining for an alluring, almost hypnotic, slow burn. This song is perfectly titled because it skulks menacingly like a glacier in the shadow of an iceberg, but it will surely affect you much quicker. Listen.
