Sad13 – “Get A Yes”

Sadie Dupuis of Speedy Ortiz officially launched her solo pop project Sad13 today, a little over six months since we heard her collaborate with Lizzo on “Basement Queens” back in January. Sad13’s debut album, Slugger, will be out in November by way of Speedy’s label Carpark, and today NPR premiered its debut single. “Get A Yes” is a semi-sweet, empowering song about sexuality and consent. “I say ‘yes’ to the dress when I put it on/ I say ‘yes’ if I want you to take it off,” Dupuis sings. “I say ‘yes’ for your touch when I need your touch/ I say ‘yes’ if I want to/ If you want to you’ve gotta get a ‘yes.'” Here’s what Dupuis said about the track:

How many kids learn about sex from pop music? And how many fun-sounding pop musicians do a heinous job as sex-ed teachers?… Like ‘Genie In A Bottle,’ which characterizes sex as an internal conflict between the mind and the body — rather than something you should only do when the minds and bodies of all parties involved are synchronized? Or ‘Blurred Lines,’ in which the narrator presumes to know what his partner wants?

Slugger was written and produced by Dupuis when she moved to Philadelphia earlier this year; listen to “Get A Yes” below.

Slugger is out 11/11 via Carpark.
