Though it was sad to see Dirty Beaches dissolve a couple years back, Alex Zhang Hungtai continued to make beautiful music under his government name and the moniker Last Lizard. Today he shares an intimate collection entitled Knave Of Hearts, which comprises seven instrumental tracks made between 2012 and 2015. Hungtai slowly builds spacious soundscapes with electric piano, found sounds, and sweeping ambient flourishes. The project devotes about 25 of its 44 minutes to a gorgeously sparse three-part suite called “Crimée.” Here’s what Hungtai had to say about the album via Bandcamp:
In the form of unsent letters and postcards, the idea of “before” and “now” becomes irrelevant. Instead, it’s a silent testament that endures the weathering and perversion of time, forever enclosed on a meridian between “before” and now.
