Haley Bonar – “Called You Queen” Video

Haley Bonar just dropped her stellar album Impossible Dream a little over a month ago. Since releasing the album she’s shared a great set of visuals for “I Can Change.” Today, she offers another clip for the standout track “Called You Queen.”

Bonar and director Torey Hanson envisioned the video as somewhat of a mission statement for the album, with a loose narrative of a young woman pursuing her dream of going to cosmetology school and fleeing a home life that isn’t very nurturing. But she quickly indulges in her newfound freedom with fun and games and a smorgasbord of desserts, diffusing the more serious tone of the beginning of the clip. Here’s what Bonar and Hanson had to say about the clip:

The video well describes the sentiment of the song in that the young girl cohabitates with the harsh realities of the world but never gives up her own “impossible dream.” In her world, she is free, she is loved by all, and most importantly, she loves herself. The excessive nature of the food and video game obsession also hints at the slightly grotesque anatomy of American culture, though the depiction of it in the video is lighthearted and cartoonish. The would-be alcoholics are as friendly and helpful as the characters Dorothy meets in the Wizard of Oz, which was a major inspiration behind the video, and we share her reality- whether she’s about to wake up or not.
